Here’s some information to help you diagnose your fault
  • The battery in your vehicle is there to store electricity for when the engine is not running. It supplies power to the vehicle when you’re starting the engine, or using the radio or other systems when parked. It is recharged by the alternator whilst driving.
  • The alternator provides electricity to keep the battery charged and run the various systems when the engine is running. These systems include; the fuel pump, ECU/PCM/BCM (computer), lights, radio, and other accessories, electrically assisted steering and more.
  • The starter motor uses battery power to crank the engine to get it started.
  • If your car has stopped whilst driving, is showing the battery light, has dim headlights, heavy steering, radio, instruments, wipers and other accessories not operating correctly it is likely to be an alternator problem.
  • If the car won’t start and no lights or accessories it probably has a flat battery. The battery may have been run flat due to overuse of lights or accessories without the engine running. Or it may have been caused by an alternator fault. Or the battery may have simply past its usable life.
  • If the engine will not crank but all other systems seem to work properly, it is most likely to be the starter.
